Karl Kaufmann (1843–1901/05)
Venice – View of the Grand Canal at Sunset, with Santa Maria della Salute
A beautiful and atmospheric Venetian veduta depicting the Grand Canal at sunset, with the monumental Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute rising prominently in the background.
The warm light of the setting sun bathes the architecture in delicate shades of rose, ochre and golden brown, while soft clouds illuminate the sky above the Venetian skyline. Gondolas and small boats animate the foreground, their silhouettes and reflections gently shimmering across the tranquil waters of the Canal Grande.
The composition captures the romantic character of Venice at the close of day, combining finely rendered architectural details with a particularly evocative treatment of light and atmosphere. The celebrated silhouette of Santa Maria della Salute, together with the waterfront palaces and gondolas, creates one of the most iconic views of Venice.
The warm, luminous palette and atmospheric perspective are characteristic of Kaufmann’s Venetian scenes, in which architectural accuracy is combined with a highly poetic interpretation of light.
