Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BCE) is best known to posterity as a prominent statesman and orator in the tumultuous period of the late Roman republic. As well as being a leading political actor of his time, he also wrote voluminously. Among his writings, around a dozen philosophical works have come down to us. Philosophy was a lifelong passion for Cicero.
Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. He was a member of the Severan dynasty, the elder son of Emperor Septimius Severus and Empress Julia Domna.

Outstanding 19th century Italian finely carved Carrara “Statuario” marble sculpture of Antinoo , after the Antique The Capitoline ‘Antinous’.
Antinous, a young Bithinius favorite of the emperor Hadrian, who died at a young age in 130 AD. and then deified. The physiognomic peculiarities of the young man are known from the numerous sculptures and coin images spread throughout the Roman Empire. In death, as in life, Antinous’ appeal lay in his youth and beauty, and his face became one of the best known in the Roman world. The handsome, sensual features of this statue – with its round face, almond eyes, strong brows, full lips and thick, tousled hair – are found on many other representations from all over Hadrian’s empire.
The original statue of a young nude male found at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli. It was bought before 1733 by Alessandro Cardinal Albani. To contemporaries it seemed to be the real attraction of his collection.The statue was bought by Pope Clement XII in 1733 and went on to form the nucleus of the Capitoline Museums, Rome, where it remains.
In the 18th century it was considered to be one of the most beautiful Roman copies of a Greek statue in the world.

19th century French finely chiseled bronze figure of Hermes .

Hermes , the messenger of the gods, is sitting on a rock, ready to leap up. He is attaching the winged sandals which, together with his petasus (winged cap), will enable him to take flight. The god’s twisted position and the play of his limbs make the composition interesting to observe from every angle.His crouched position, the upward slant of his limbs and shoulder line, and his face turned to scan the horizon, give an impression of dynamism — that Hermes is about to soar into the sky. The position of his left leg, with his weight on his toes, also suggests that the messenger god is ready for take-off.

Finely carved mythological roman subject of Minerva in Marble Travertino . Excellent condition from an estate of Veneto.

Minerva (Pallas Athena in Greek) was one of the most important of the ancient Greek and Roman goddesses. She was originally a goddess of war, hence her armour and spear. She fought on behalf of just causes and is therefore seen as a civilising influence, in contrast to Mars. By being associated with wisdom she became the patron of a number of institutions of learning and the arts. She was also patroness of many household crafts, such as spinning. The city of Athens was under her special protection.
As an exemplar of wisdom her attributes are books and an owl. Other diverse attributes are also associated with her such as the head of the Medusa which was given to her by Perseus after she had helped him kill the monster. She was one of the three goddesses involved in the Judgement of Paris.
