Late 19th-century Grand Tour reproduction of an Attic red-figure chalice krater, inspired by examples dating to the 6th century BC.
The vessel is richly decorated with classical mythological scenes, executed in the characteristic red-figure style and framed by elegant geometric borders and Greek key motifs.
One side depicts a Dionysian procession, with Dionysus at the centre accompanied by two satyrs. The opposite side features a Gigantomachy, with Heracles fighting the Giants.
A refined example of the 19th-century Grand Tour fascination with Classical antiquity, intended to evoke the appearance and cultural prestige of ancient Greek pottery.
