The supports are formed as twisted cord uprights terminating in finely cast griffin heads, with aquiline feet , elegant, symbolic detailing seen in elite decorative arts. The structure is united by a lower tier also in black porphyry , a luxury stone associated with imperial Rome and revived during Neoclassicism.
